Narrow-leaved phillyrea
Phillyrea angustifolia L.
An evergreen shrub (1-3 meters). It differs from broad-leaved phillyrea, among other things, in its lanceolate leaves (narrow and long). The flowers are gathered in clusters of 5-7 small white or pink flowers located in the axils of the leaves. Phillyrea is a good honey plant. The fruit is a fleshy drupe, round and pointed at the apex, blue in color when unripe and black when ripe, gathered in clusters. It regenerates easily after fires. The wood is hard, compact, very fine-grained, heavy, and suitable for various types of processing. It was used to make good charcoal. The bark has dyeing properties. The Mediterranean area is particularly critical with regard to the ongoing climate changes, which are expected to bring torrential rains on the one hand and significant increases in the duration of the summer drought on the other. These new conditions will make life more or less easy for the various plants of the Mediterranean scrub. Recent studies have found that phillyrea may be better adapted than others to these changes and therefore increase its presence.
